Summary from Goodreads:

Anya could really use a friend. But her new BFF isn’t kidding about the “Forever” part.
Of all the things Anya expected to find at the bottom of an old well, a new friend was not one of them. Especially not a new friend who’s been dead for a century.
Falling down a well is bad enough, but Anya’s normal life might actually be worse. She’s embarrassed by her family, self-conscious about her body, and she’s pretty much given up on fitting in at school. A new friend—even a ghost—is just what she needs.
Or so she thinks. Spooky, sardonic, and secretly sincere, Anya’s Ghost is a wonderfully entertaining debut from author/artist Vera Brosgol.

My Thoughts

So I’m going to keep this review short and sweet since it’s the day before Thanksgiving (if you live in the U.S.) and we probably all have a lot going on.  Anyway, I usually don’t read a ton of graphic novels.  It’s not that I think they’re bad.  I actually find them quite difficult to read, because the illustrations are obviously such an important part of the story telling, but my brain just wants to focus on the text.  But I became very interested in Anya’s Ghost after I read Alisa’s review on Picture Me Reading, so I decided to give it a try.

I really liked Anya’s Ghost.  There’s a real creepiness to it (I mean there IS a ghost involved) and I do have a soft spot for creepy books.  It never gets downright scary, but the atmosphere was a bit eerie.

Anya’s Ghost is my favorite kind of ghost story – one that’s goal is more than just creeping you out.  This book in particular is about learning how to accept yourself for who you are, even if that means you’re not like everyone else.  I do admit that Anya did frustrate me a little at the beginning, because I wanted to tell her that she’s great, and to not change herself, but she grew on my pretty quickly.  I mean, I think we’ve all felt that way in high school.  Anya’s growth throughout the book was great, and I really think that Brosgol handled it perfectly and realistically.

As this is a graphic novel, I must talk (briefly) about the illustrations.  I’m not artist, and really no next to nothing about different artistic styles, but I loved the illustrations for Anya’s Ghost.  The cool colors really helped create an eerie atmosphere, and the character of the ghost was totally creepy.  I loved it!

Overall I am so glad that I decided to try out this graphic novel.  It was a super quick read, but it also packed a lot of punch.  If you’re looking for something a little different to read (or if you’re way behind on your Goodreads Reading Challenge like me) look into Anya’s Ghost.
